Ryan J McGrory, Romatic Expressionist Artist

Abstract Romanticism

Ryan McGrory is a Boston-based artist who examines the psychological struggles, moral dilemmas, and emotional turmoil of the human experience through his paintings. He aims to depict negative and positive emotions as dramatic scenes, rendered with gestural strokes that allude to various forces of nature and contorted human forms. His work romanticizes the< ambivalence of opposing emotions, theatrically embodied for the viewer to confront.

Ryan conflates historical painting styles to achieve a heightened drama in his work; his gestural handling of paint is attributed to Abstract Expressionism, his forms that hint at powerful forces in nature are inspired by Romanticism, and his use of chiaroscuro pulls from the Baroque period.
